Hilton Head IT seminars, May 5-9, 2003

Attention IT Managers and Practitioners:
Would you like to know why the viability of Intel's 64-bit architecture is being questioned, or why one transportation company recently pulled the plug on a $43 million project with Websphere, UDB, and XML, or why a large telecom company's server consolidation project imploded? Are you wondering if Linux is a legitimate alternative, what opensource is all about, if its practical to convert Cobol code to Java, or how Java compares to .NET? If you prefer straight answers and don't mind having very frank discussions about vendors and technology, then please read on.

I would like to invite you and any members of your IT organization to join us on Hilton Head Island May 5-9 for our next Technical Awareness Series (TAS). As the series name implies, these seminars are excellent for IT managers who don't come from technical backgrounds, and for managers or IT architects who are strong in one area but need more breadth. Each day is a stand-alone seminar so can attend all or part of the week as your needs dictate.

ACTS has organized an outstanding line-up of speakers for the May series. Please note the diversity and breadth of technology covered during the week:

-- IT Strategy in the Trenches, presentation from David Hines, Director, Business Operations and Support
        Services for Progressive Insurance
-- Vendor Strategies: Sun, HP/Compaq, Microsoft, Intel, and IBM, by Bill Carico, President of ACTS
-- Comparing server hardware and architectures, presentation by Dr. Guru Rao, IBM Fellow and Chief Server
        Architect
-- Quality Principles that will work for IT, presentation by H. Dale Reeves, Quality Manager for Texas Dept of
        Human Services
-- The Open Source Movement, presentation by industry legend Joe Sitter, ACTS Advisory Board
-- Outsourcing presentation by Joe Sitter
-- The Transition to Web Services, Dennis Wunder, IBM Briefing Center
-- The latest in storage technology, featuring Storage Area Networks (SANs), presentation by John Kirschner,
        ACTS Advisory Board
-- Architectural Patterns for Successful e-Business (covering 12,000 engagements), presentation by John
        Kirschner
-- Comparing Operating Systems, presentation by Bill Carico
-- Best Practices and Benchmarking IT Operations, presentation by Bill Carico
-- Various presentations on Linux by Dennis Wunder, Bill Carico, Joe Sitter, and Dr. Rao

Here are the particulars:
For the last 16 years ACTS Corporation has gathered customers and clients over 50 times at TAS to discuss enterprise technology issues. TAS is a week-long single-track session.

Who should attend?
-- IT Managers who need a technology update
-- Managers new to IT that need a technical jump-start
-- IT management teams who want to do planning and formulate strategy
-- Technologists who need a refresher, or who need more breadth

TAS focuses on equipping IT decision-makers to deal with enterprise-level technology issues. TAS is unique in its breadth of coverage, at just the right depth. What many find appealing is the time taken to level-set before drilling down into technical discussions. The sessions are highly interactive, giving customers an opportunity to raise and discuss issues that are important to them.

Topics covered in the May TAS session include:
-- Systems, Strategies, and Architectures
-- Servers and Operating Systems
-- Internet e-business infrastructure
-- Enterprise Applications and integration issues
-- Outsourcing
-- The Open Source movement
-- The latest in storage technology, featuring Storage Area Networks (SANs)
-- Linux

Comments from people who have previously attended TAS:

Jim Shille, CIO - American Fidelity Assurance: "The TAS Seminar provides a solid description (understanding) of many technical issues, the instructors are outstanding and have exceptional credentials. I would recommend this training to all IS Management personnel."

Each day of the series can be attended as a stand-alone session, but most people come for all 5 days. The cost is $450 per day, $1950 for the week. TAS Alumni receive a 50% discount on previously attended sessions.

I truly hope you will take advantage of this exciting technology seminar.
